The University of Salford held a Knowledge Transfer Partnership and Knowledge Exchange Panel Discussion on Tuesday 24th June.
The day brought together colleagues from across the University for a day of presentations and discussions. Opening talks were carried out by Professor Simon Green, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Research and Knowledge Exchange and Rachel Woolley, Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange. The panel discussion on collaborative partnerships in knowledge exchange took place, led by Professor Francine Morris.

Salford University and VUE have had a close relationship for years, partnering on multiple projects since 2019, such as the following:

2019 – KTP - Driver behaviour scoring models using machine learning - Developed model prototypes that enhanced VUE’s analytics engine, laying the groundwork for smarter fleet safety insights.

2021 – FNOL identification using video analysis and DL - Improved our backlog triage - reducing claim latency and improving claims accuracy.

2022 – Apply ML for recommendations on fuel fleet transition to EV - Experimented and researched sustainable solutions to get more diverse ideas and practical insights in this field.

2023 – Exploring unsupervised methods in crash detection - Expanded VUE’s R&D toolkit, future-proofing our solutions and uncovering new architecture patterns for intelligent event detection.
Our collaboration has enabled rapid prototyping of emerging ideas and ensured early recruitment of top talent, supporting strategic ML initiatives. A total of 5 students from the University have been placed at VUE to work on the projects mentioned. All of the MSc students have stated that they have majorly benefitted from the partnership as they gained hands-on work experience within the data science field.
Collaborating on the deep learning project with VUE on the 2019 Driver Behaviour Scoring Model as well as working with several companies in the Greater Manchester area on the AI Foundry Project was highly beneficial for the University. All collaborations resulted in the development of a new final year module on Deep Learning for BSc (Hons) in Computer Science Programme in 2020. This was followed by the development of a brand-new course, a MSc Artificial Intelligence, with approval being received in 2022 and a start to recruitment in 2023.

Here at VUE, we’re always looking at innovative ways to create proactive solutions for road safety as that is our main priority – creating safer environments for all, across numerous different industries.
Using innovation, we were able to develop products such as Pedestrian AI, a technology that intelligently detects vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, around a vehicle, highly mitigating the risks of accidents.
Our Driver Distraction Monitoring System (DDAI) is another one of VUE’s solutions, an intelligent device that improves safety and reduces accidents by identifying distractions such as fatigue, smoking and mobile phone use.
