Operating a large mixed fleet of specialist vehicles across the UK presents significant safety and compliance challenges. Shred Station’s vehicles regularly operate in urban environments, including London, where compliance with Transport for London’s Direct Vision Standard (DVS) is a mandatory requirement for heavy goods vehicles over 12 tonnes. The company needed a solution that would ensure full DVS compliance across all vehicles entering the capital, whilst also addressing broader fleet safety concerns including driver behaviour, incident documentation, and the protection of vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.
Beyond regulatory compliance, Shred Station required a system that could support their claims management process, provide defensible evidence when incidents or complaints arose, and contribute to a proactive approach to health and safety across their entire operation. Given the diversity of their fleet, from small vans to large articulated vehicles, they needed a provider capable of delivering a flexible solution across multiple vehicle types, all managed through a single platform.
VUE has worked in partnership with Shred Station over a number of years to deliver a comprehensive video telematics and vehicle safety solution across their mixed fleet. The installation covers vans, rigid trucks, articulated lorries, and hook loaders, with each vehicle type receiving a configuration tailored to its specific operational requirements.
For vehicles operating in London, VUE fitted DVS-compliant camera and sensor kits, incorporating cameras, in-cab monitors, left turn alarms, and blind spot signage to meet the requirements of the Direct Vision Standard. These systems provide drivers with enhanced visibility around their vehicles, particularly on the nearside, helping to protect vulnerable road users in dense urban environments.
Across the wider fleet, VUE also deployed Driver Distraction AI (DDAI) technology. This in-cab AI camera monitors driver behaviour in real time, detecting distraction events such as mobile phone use, fatigue, and smoking, and issuing immediate in-cab alerts to help drivers maintain focus on the road. The DDAI footage is also used by Shred Station for targeted driver training, providing real-world examples that support behavioural improvement and reinforce safe driving practices.
All systems integrate with VUEhub, VUE’s fleet management platform, giving Shred Station’s operations team centralised access to footage, telematics data, and fleet information regardless of vehicle type or kit configuration. This single-platform approach is particularly valuable for a mixed fleet operation, enabling consistent oversight and management across every vehicle in the fleet.
DVS Compliance and Vulnerable Road User Protection: VUE’s DVS-compliant kits have enabled Shred Station to meet Transport for London’s Direct Vision Standard requirements across all vehicles entering the capital. The camera and sensor systems provide drivers with comprehensive visibility around their vehicles, directly supporting the protection of cyclists, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users in London’s busy streets.
Improved Claims Management: VUE’s systems have transformed Shred Station’s ability to manage insurance claims. Footage and data captured by VUE’s cameras provide the evidence needed to defend against claims quickly and effectively. The speed of claims handling has improved significantly, with Shred Station able to supply data to insurers promptly, and the company expects to see a positive impact on insurance premiums as a result.
Driver Behaviour and Training: The introduction of our DMS system has contributed to measurable improvements in driver behaviour across the fleet. The AI-powered alerts help prevent incidents before they occur, whilst the recorded footage provides Shred Station with a valuable training resource. The company has also implemented monthly manager audits using the system to ensure drivers are consistently following procedures.
Staff Protection and Accountability: The system has proven invaluable in protecting Shred Station’s staff when complaints have been made against drivers that were subsequently found to be incorrect. Video evidence provides an objective record of events, enabling the company to defend its drivers with confidence and resolve disputes based on facts rather than unsubstantiated claims.
Brand Reputation and GDPR Alignment: For a company whose entire business is built on the secure handling of confidential data, the safety and monitoring capabilities provided by VUE’s technology reinforce Shred Station’s reputation as a responsible and accountable operator. The system supports the company’s wider commitment to data protection and operational transparency, complementing their existing GDPR compliance framework.
"Working in partnership with VUE has been a great asset to our business. Their wide range of telematics and safety systems allows us to manage all our fleet compliance and safety needs through one trusted provider."
"What really sets VUE apart is their great customer service and quick turnaround on resolving faults, helping us minimise downtime and keep our fleet safe, compliant, and operational as we continue to grow."
